The Queen of the Pandya kingdom dispatched an emissary to request Sambandhar's intervention, as the King had succumbed to Jain influences. Despite Appar's apprehensions regarding potential dangers from the Jains, Sambandhar responded with assurance through the melody of Kolaru Pathigam.
In Tamil, "KOL" signifies both planets and malevolent forces, while "ARU" denotes destruction or annihilation. Thus, the hymn articulates the eradication of harmful astral influences. For devotees of Lord Neelakanta Shiva, alongside Goddess Uma Maheshwari, chanting or listening to this hymn is believed to transmute adversity into success. Each verse concludes with an affirmation of this transformative power, detailing aspects of Lord Neelakanta Shiva and his consort.
The hymn intriguingly references Ravana and assures devotees that Vishnu and Brahma will support those who revere Shiva.
